US-based startup Hyviva set out to revolutionize home energy storage with their “VivaGrid” system — a modular, long-duration hydrogen battery designed to give homeowners reliable, zero-carbon backup power. To achieve this breakthrough, Hyviva required a hydrogen storage solution that was exceptionally safe for indoor installation, compact enough for residential spaces, and scalable. GRZ’s DASH M1 solid-state hydrogen storage module was selected as the core enabling technology, allowing Hyviva to bring the world’s first modular hydrogen home battery to market with a public debut at CES 2025.

The Challenge: Safe & Compact Hydrogen Storage for the Home

Hyviva’s vision was to deliver energy independence through a system that stores renewable energy as hydrogen and converts it back into electricity on demand. To make this viable for residential use, the storage technology had to meet strict safety expectations and fit within standard household footprints, qualities conventional 350–700 bar tanks cannot provide.

A key advantage of solid-state storage is its inherently safer pressure range: VivaGrid’s hydrogen is stored at approximately 30 bar, making indoor installation safe, practical, and far simpler than high-pressure alternatives.

“This partnership allows us to commercialize a climate-neutral, fuel-cell-based power backup and refueling system, utilizing GRZ’s advanced solid-state hydrogen storage technology.”

The Solution: The DASH M1 as a Technology Enabler

GRZ’s DASH M1 storage module is a compact, low-pressure metal hydride system that seamlessly integrates into VivaGrid’s “drawer-like” architecture. This enabled Hyviva to design a safe, expandable home energy system centered on hydrogen — without relying on traditional high-pressure cylinders.

VivaGrid Architecture:

  • On-site electrolyzer producing green hydrogen
  • Modular DASH M1 storage drawers
  • 3 kW fuel cell delivering clean backup power
  • AI-driven energy management and system control

The Results: A Successful Market Debut and a Clear Path to Scale

Following its CES 2025 reveal, VivaGrid demonstrated the viability of modular hydrogen systems for home energy backup — offering long-duration storage in a compact, home-ready format.

Key Outcomes

30 kWh

Long-Duration Storage Capacity

The VivaGrid base system stores enough hydrogen to provide approximately 30 kWh of clean, reliable home energy.

1 kgH2/day

Renewable On-Site Production

The system’s integrated electrolyzer generates around 1 kilogram of hydrogen per day from solar electricity.

+1 kg Modules

Modular Expansion

Storage capacity grows with household needs by adding 1-kg solid-state hydrogen modules.
