US-based startup Hyviva set out to revolutionize home energy storage with their “VivaGrid” system — a modular, long-duration hydrogen battery designed to give homeowners reliable, zero-carbon backup power. To achieve this breakthrough, Hyviva required a hydrogen storage solution that was exceptionally safe for indoor installation, compact enough for residential spaces, and scalable. GRZ’s DASH M1 solid-state hydrogen storage module was selected as the core enabling technology, allowing Hyviva to bring the world’s first modular hydrogen home battery to market with a public debut at CES 2025.
The Challenge: Safe & Compact Hydrogen Storage for the Home
Hyviva’s vision was to deliver energy independence through a system that stores renewable energy as hydrogen and converts it back into electricity on demand. To make this viable for residential use, the storage technology had to meet strict safety expectations and fit within standard household footprints, qualities conventional 350–700 bar tanks cannot provide.
A key advantage of solid-state storage is its inherently safer pressure range: VivaGrid’s hydrogen is stored at approximately 30 bar, making indoor installation safe, practical, and far simpler than high-pressure alternatives.
