Auto AG Truck is one of Switzerland’s leading commercial vehicle service providers — and the exclusive after-sales partner for Hyundai hydrogen trucks in the country. As the company expanded its hydrogen workshop capabilities across all eight locations, Auto AG aimed to increase efficiency and sustainability by producing and handling hydrogen directly on-site at its Rothenburg headquarters. Instead of relying on external hydrogen deliveries, they wanted a safe, compact, and workshop-appropriate refueling system that could integrate seamlessly with their locally generated green hydrogen.
The Challenge: Achieving True Hydrogen Service Independence
Hydrogen trucks serviced at Auto AG’s workshops require an initial refuel after maintenance or repair. Relying on external hydrogen transport introduced cost, scheduling limitations, and emissions, especially for small, workshop-scale quantities. Auto AG needed an on-site solution that would:
- Provide reliable post-maintenance hydrogen refueling
- Eliminate reliance on transported hydrogen
- Reduce operational costs and carbon footprint
- Fit safely within a workshop environment
- Support future growth in hydrogen truck servicing
The Solution: On-Site Refueling Powered by GRZ’s HyCo HRS
Auto AG produces its own green hydrogen using on-site solar electricity and an electrolyzer. To store, compress, and dispense this hydrogen safely and efficiently within the workshop, GRZ delivered the HyCo HRS.
Key Differentiators of the HyCo HRS:
- Low-pressure solid-state hydrogen storage using metal hydrides
- Integrated thermochemical compression
- High-purity hydrogen delivery for workshop refueling
- Compact, space-efficient design suitable for indoor environments

Together, Auto AG’s renewable hydrogen production and GRZ’s HyCo HRS create a fully self-sufficient, workshop-scale refueling ecosystem.
The Results: New Capabilities and a Model for Sustainable Mobility
The commissioning of the HyCo HRS at Rothenburg has given Auto AG Truck a fully self-sufficient, workshop-scale refueling hub. This pilot installation demonstrates how hydrogen service centers can reduce operational costs, eliminate delivery logistics, and expand support for hydrogen truck fleets.
